Cold Tire Inflation Pressure (CIP) is the pressure inside a tire measured when the vehicle has been parked for at least 3 hours or driven less than 1 mile. As a car is driven, internal air heats up from tread flex and road friction, increasing tire pressure by 4 to 6 PSI (0.3 to 0.4 Bar). Never bleed air from a hot tire to reach the placard PSI.

1. The Science of Thermal Air Expansion

Tire inflation operates strictly under Gay-Lussac's Law of thermodynamics: pressure is directly proportional to temperature when volume is constant. As a rule of thumb, tire pressure changes by approximately 1 PSI for every 10°F (5.5°C) change in temperature.

Example Thermal Scenario:

If your door placard recommends 32 PSI cold, and you measure your tire after driving 20 miles at highway speeds on a warm day, your gauge will likely read 36 to 37 PSI. This pressure rise is normal and engineered into your tire's load safety factor. Bleeding air from a hot tire will leave it dangerously under-inflated once it cools down.

2. When & How to Measure Cold Pressure Correctly

  • 1.First Thing in the Morning: Measure tire pressure before starting your first trip of the day.
  • 2.Shaded Side Inspection: Direct sunlight can heat a stationary tire sidewall by 10-15°F, causing a 1-2 PSI imbalance.
  • 3.If Forced to Measure Hot: If you must add air to a hot tire at a service station, add +4 PSI above the door placard recommendation, then re-check cold the following morning.
