Standard Load (SL) vs Extra Load (XL)
& Light Truck Load Ranges Explained

Author: TireDotCode Editorial Teamβ€’Updated: August 2026β€’Technical Load Analysis
⚑ QUICK DEFINITION

Standard Load (SL) passenger tires reach their maximum load capacity at 36 PSI (2.5 Bar). Extra Load (XL or Reinforced) tires feature reinforced internal carcasses and reach maximum load capacity at 41-42 PSI (2.9 Bar). Adding pressure above these maximum load thresholds does NOT increase weight capacity.

1. SL vs XL Pressure Ceilings & Inflation Rules

Standard Load (SL)
  • β€’ Max Load Pressure Ceiling: 35–36 PSI
  • β€’ Max Carcass Safety Limit: 44–51 PSI
  • β€’ Ideal for standard passenger cars and crossovers.
Extra Load (XL / Reinforced)
  • β€’ Max Load Pressure Ceiling: 41–42 PSI
  • β€’ Max Carcass Safety Limit: 50–51 PSI
  • β€’ Required for heavy EVs, sport SUVs, and towing.

2. Light Truck (LT) Load Ranges (C, D, E)

Pickup trucks and commercial vans use Light Truck (LT) tires rated by traditional ply ratings and load range letters:

Load RangePly RatingMax PSI Rating
Load Range C6-Ply Rated50 PSI
Load Range D8-Ply Rated65 PSI
Load Range E10-Ply Rated80 PSI
