Can I Use a Different Tire Size on My Car?

Why “it is within 3%” is not a complete answer
Diameter difference is useful because it estimates changes in revolutions per mile and indicated speed. A widely repeated percentage threshold can serve as a preliminary comparison, but there is no universal percentage that certifies every replacement as compatible or safe.
Two sizes can calculate to nearly the same diameter while using different wheel diameters, section widths, load capacities, or approved rim widths. They can also interact differently with fenders, struts, steering components, suspension travel, and electronic systems.
The seven checks that determine the answer
Treat a size change as a system decision, not a single-number conversion.
- Vehicle approval: check the placard, owner’s manual, and manufacturer documentation.
- Wheel diameter: the tire bead-seat diameter must match the wheel exactly.
- Wheel width: use a rim width approved by the tire manufacturer for that tire.
- Load and speed: meet the vehicle’s specified load index, speed symbol, and tire type.
- Physical clearance: check steering lock and suspension compression, not only parked clearance.
- Vehicle systems: consider TPMS, ABS, stability control, gearing, and driver-assistance calibration.
- Axle matching: follow front/rear and AWD circumference requirements from the vehicle manufacturer.

Can I use a tire with the same diameter but a different width?

Can I put 17-inch tires on 18-inch wheels?
No. The final number in a metric radial size identifies nominal wheel diameter, and the tire bead-seat diameter must match the wheel.
Will a different tire size affect the speedometer?
A change in rolling circumference can change the relationship between indicated and actual speed. Nominal size math provides an estimate; manufacturer-published revolutions per mile is more tire-specific.
Can I change only two tires to a different size?
