Tread depth is the single most measurable indicator of a tire's remaining wet-weather capability. New passenger tires start life with roughly 10/32" to 12/32" (7.9β9.5 mm) of tread. The legal floor in most US states β and the point where molded wear bars surface β is 2/32" (1.6 mm). Everything that matters happens between those two numbers.

2. The Penny Test and the Quarter Test
Without a tread depth gauge, two US coins give a serviceable field measurement. Insert a penny into a primary tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down, facing you. If the tread does not cover any part of Lincoln's head, the groove is at or below roughly 2/32" β the tire is legally worn out. Repeat the check at the inner, center, and outer grooves, and at several points around the circumference: uneven readings across the tread width signal alignment or inflation problems worth diagnosing (see our uneven wear guide).
The quarter test works the same way but fails earlier: if Washington's full head is visible, roughly 4/32" remains β the point where many professionals recommend replacement for wet or winter driving. A proper tread depth gauge costs only a few dollars, reads in both 32nds and millimeters, and removes the guesswork entirely.
3. Tread Wear Indicators (TWI): The Built-In Gauge
Every DOT-approved passenger tire has tread wear indicator bars β small raised ribs molded across the bottom of the primary grooves, usually marked on the sidewall shoulder with a small triangle, "TWI" lettering, or a brand logo. When the surrounding tread wears down flush with these bars, the tire has reached approximately 2/32" and must be replaced. A tire showing wear-bar contact at any point of its circumference fails inspection in most jurisdictions, regardless of how much tread remains elsewhere.
4. Primary vs Secondary Grooves
Inspection standards measure the primary grooves β the deep channels containing the wear indicators that run around the full circumference. Shallower secondary grooves and sipes (the thin slits that aid snow and wet grip) are designed to wear away before the primary pattern and are not counted when assessing legal tread depth. This is why a tire can look "slick" in its siping detail yet still measure legal in its primary grooves β and why winter capability disappears long before a tire is legally worn out.
5. How the UK MOT Standard Compares
The UK's annual MOT inspection defines the same 1.6 mm floor more precisely than most US state codes: primary grooves must measure at least 1.6 mm within the central three-quarters of the tread breadth, around the entire circumference. Notably, the outer edges beyond that central band may legally be bald. Insufficient tread depth is classified as a "Dangerous" defect β an immediate MOT failure that legally prohibits driving the vehicle away from the test station. US inspections vary by state, but the engineering consensus behind both systems is identical: below 1.6 mm, a tire cannot evacuate enough water to resist hydroplaning at highway speeds.
6. Making Tread Last: Rotation & Pressure
Two habits determine whether you reach your tires' full mileage potential. First, rotate every 5,000β8,000 miles (or per your owner's manual) so drive-axle wear distributes across all four corners. Second, hold the door-placard cold pressure: underinflation wears shoulders and overheats the carcass; overinflation wears the center strip.
